- Network administrator are responsible for the ongoing management and maintenance of the network
- They can:
- Add/remove users:
- A user account is stored in a record of database of users
- They normally belong to a group in order to manage permission and user rights
- Assigning users to printers
- Printers and devices can be assigned to users in order to promote productivity
- Giving users file access rights
- This determines the processes a user can perform on a file/directory at the file level
- Different types of permission include:
- Full control
- Modify
- Read
- Write
- Installation of software/sharing with users
- Admins must install appropriate software so they can have access
- Network Operating System (NOS) automates this procedure
- Client Installation and Protocol Assignment
- Creation of a client involves installing networking software
- This involves:
- Checking the installation of Network Interface Card (NIC)
- Installing protocols
- Giving the computer a unique name on the network
- Logon/Logoff Procedures
- Logon: Vital for network security and can be used to gain access to resources
- Logoff: Ensures that all data is correctly saved and programs are closed in the correct manner
- Prevents users data from being open to others
- Network-Based Applications
- Involves the use of a thin client
- It is a network/personal computer without any disk drives
- Uses a file server to store all software/data files
- Application software can be shared among all users, meaning that only one copy has to be installed
